Belu-Simion Fainaru

—

I am an artist;

I do not support cultural boycotts. I believe in dialogue and exchange, especially in challenging times. Art thrives on openness, and any narrowing of that space diminishes it. Embracing diverse perspectives enriches the discourse around art and society, and my commitment to dialogue has deepened in recent years.

I value the freedom of expression and welcome a plurality of voices and perspectives. I am here to share my work and to remain open to dialogue. The Israeli Pavilion welcomes all who come in a genuine spirit of exchange. I hope visitors will bring their own experiences and perspectives, making the work a space for thoughtful engagement.

An artist, curator, and cultural entrepreneur born in Romania, Belu-Simion Fainaru established his artistic practice in contemporary art before settling in Haifa, Israel. His career spans major international exhibitions, including Documenta IX in Kassel and the 58th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 2019, where he represented Romania—an important milestone that strengthened his standing as a conceptually driven artist.

Fainaru's work has been shown in leading museums and international exhibitions worldwide. His artistic practice consistently explores complex ideas drawn from philosophical and mystical traditions, translating abstract concepts into immersive sculptural and installation-based experiences.

A key highlight of his career is receiving the Israel Prize, a testament to his substantial contributions to the arts. This national honour underscores his standing as a prominent figure in Israeli contemporary art, further cementing his influence and reinforcing his recognition within the international art world.

Fainaru works at the intersection of art, philosophy, and social engagement. His practice addresses themes of identity, memory, history, and territory, fostering dialogue between the private and the collective, the local and the global. Drawing on Kabbalistic thought, he delves into questions of existence, belonging, alienation, and the boundaries shaping contemporary life.

Fainaru is the founder of the Mediterranean Biennale, a platform that promotes dialogue between communities in conflict, alongside educational initiatives that bring young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds together. Since 2008, he has served as the founder, director, and chief curator of the Mediterranean Biennale of Contemporary Art in Israel. In this capacity, together with Avital Bar-Shay, he has led the Encounters program—an educational initiative employing art as a tool for fostering dialogue between communities. The program is based on meetings between Jewish and Arab (Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Bedouin) youth, teachers, and educators, held in communities representing a wide range of religions and cultures.

In 2015, he founded AMOCA—the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sakhnin—an institution dedicated to fostering coexistence between Arab and Jewish communities through inclusive, collaborative, and socially engaged artistic practices.

His work introduces a novel approach, using artistic activity to foster human dialogue and coexistence among communities living in conflict. It promotes peace education, tolerance, and non-violence. Through art education, these initiatives aim to transcend regional politics and disputes by emphasising artistic creation and universal human values, grounded in vision and mutual respect, with the hope of achieving peaceful coexistence and a better future for all.

He presented numerous solo exhibitions at leading venues worldwide, including the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; SMAK, Ghent; M HKA, Antwerp; the Museum of Modern Art, Brussels; Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg; the Modern Art Museum, Saitama, Japan.

Academic Activity
Belu-Simion Fainaru is a professor at the University of Haifa, where the student body includes both Arab and Jewish students. In this capacity, he actively implements and teaches the Space for Change program—a unique intercultural educational art initiative that brings together Jewish and Arab students through art as a shared language—within an academic setting. In collaboration with the University's Rector, Prof. Mouna Maroun, he has also extended the program beyond the campus to engage Jewish and Arab youth, creating shared spaces for dialogue, creativity, and meaningful intercultural exchange.

The program provides a safe, open environment free of prejudice and fear, fostering mutual understanding, cooperation, and respect. Through art workshops, study sessions, and collaborative activities, students deepen their awareness of cultural diversity and heritage within a multicultural society. The program emphasises the role of art as a powerful means of expressing identity, promoting human rights, combating racism, and strengthening democratic values, laying the ground for sustainable coexistence based on equality, tolerance, and shared human values.

Belu-Simion Fainaru

I perceive art as a universal language through which individuality takes shape and human connection becomes possible. Throughout history, art has reflected the diversity of our world, yet its true value lies in its openness: art belongs to everyone, transcending backgrounds, beliefs, and borders.

My work invites viewers to engage with fundamental questions of identity, belonging, memory, loss, and care. The installation Rose of Nothingness draws on the work of Paul Celan. I translate the fragmented language and profound silences of his poetry into a physical environment. A network of pipes channels dark liquid into a reflective pool, rendering the intangible nature of memory and time both visible and audible. Each drop marks a fragile moment in which presence and absence meet. The installation unfolds as a “living Talmudic page” without letters, where meaning emerges not from what is said, but from the tension between drops, calling our attention to the beauty and trauma that persist within silence.

Art does not exist in a vacuum. While context inevitably shapes perception, I believe it can create moments of reflection, even in difficult conditions. Art cannot resolve political crises, but it can open a space for understanding and connection, enabling collective reflection that informs our responses to the world around us.

I am an artist; I do not support cultural boycotts. I believe in dialogue and exchange, especially in challenging times. Art thrives on openness, and any narrowing of that space diminishes it. Embracing diverse perspectives enriches the discourse around art and society, and for this reason, my commitment to dialogue has deepened in recent years.

The installation opens as a dialogue with viewers, inviting them to read it within the temporal dimension—a space of possibility where meaning is not given, but emerges through lingering; like writing without words, like ink that does not seek to explain itself, but calls for listening, attention, and breathing. The surface, the dripping, and the silence between actions form a page whose reading unfolds not only in space but also in time: each drop is a transient sign that leaves a trace, a temporal unit that evokes the Kabbalistic notion of ongoing tikkun: rupture is not final, and memory carries the possibility of repair. In a world saturated with images, crises, and constant noise, I seek to slow time, allowing an experience of suspension and reminding us that life, like art, is not created by accumulation or excess, but by listening to what is absent, to what is still becoming.

Avital Bar-Shay

Avital Bar-Shay is a curator, artist, architect, co-founder, and co-director of the Mediterranean Biennale. She was born in 1966 in Israel, where she lives and works.

Her practice unfolds at the intersection of art, architecture, and cultural initiative, combining conceptual thinking with interventions in the public sphere. Over the years, she has exhibited in Israel and internationally, and has developed artistic projects that explore the points of convergence between place and identity, fostering a dialogue among art, society, and the environment.

With a career spanning more than two decades, Bar-Shay is a cultural entrepreneur dedicated to promoting artistic and social initiatives that connect artists, curators, and communities. Her work focuses particularly on advancing art in peripheral regions and developing platforms for cultural dialogue among countries and communities across the Mediterranean. In 2025, she co-curated the exhibition Crossing Borders at the 14th Havana Biennale.

In 2008, together with Belu-Simion Fainaru, she founded the Mediterranean Biennale—an international platform for contemporary art that brings together artists from across the Mediterranean and beyond. Since 2010, she has served as the Biennale’s curator and artistic producer, leading its artistic and international activities.

In this capacity, Bar-Shay has led the Encounters program, an educational initiative that uses art to foster dialogue between communities. The program is based on meetings between youth, teachers, and educators from diverse Jewish, Arab Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Bedouin backgrounds, held in local communities representing a wide range of religions and cultures. These encounters create an empowering experiential-educational process, bringing participants closer together, increasing awareness of the importance of dialogue and tolerance, and encouraging connections and collaborations among community members. Shared artistic experiences build authentic familiarity and create dialogue as a foundation for a better society.
